Today’s prayer “Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done” is the fourth in a series of prayers working through what is known as the Lord’s prayer found in Matthew 6v9-13 and Luke 11v2-4. The Lord’s prayer is a teaching from Jesus on how to pray and provides us with a framework for living life with the Father. You should begin by reading the prayers “Father,” “In Heaven” and “Hallowed Be Your Name.”
Father,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Your Son taught us to pray these words.
Because our prayers really do make a difference.
Because You hear us and You answer us.
The main way Your kingdom comes is through prayer.
The main way Your will is done is through prayer.
When we pray, some things happen.
And when we don’t pray, some things don’t happen.
But we must confess that while we say we believe it.
We don’t truly believe it as our prayer life, or rather lack thereof, reflects.
Forgive us for falling faithfully into fatalism.
Forgive us for entrapping and entrusting ourselves in “the insidious idea that what’s going to happen is going to happen with or without our prayers.”
Because the truth is…
When we pray, some things happen.
And when we don’t pray some things don’t happen.
For You are our Father—good, loving and caring.
And You are in the heavens—near us, always present with us.
And You are hallowed—as in holy, as in the good, the beautiful, the true.
Which is why we can pray,
Your kingdom come,
Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven
With boldness and confidence and expectation.
When we ask, You give.
When we seek, You reveal.
When we knock, You open doors.
You are our Father in the heavens who is hallowed.
And You give good gifts to Your children.
You don’t pretend to answer us.
You do answer us.
Your kingdom comes, Your will is done on earth as it is in heaven when we pray because prayer is learning to live life with You, our loving and caring, near and present, good, beautiful and true Father.
The world needs us to live with You, Father.
To pray without ceasing.
To abide and remain and live and make our home with You.
To be constantly aware and connected to You.
Holy Spirit, we partner with You in Your work in this world.
We long to see the darkness in this world flee in the light of Your kingdom.
We long to see the direction of reality bend to Your will.
Father, Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Enable us, empower us to be people of Your name, to do the things that You did, Jesus.
2000 years ago, Your follower Mark wrote, “The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.”
Indeed, only the beginning.
Only the beginning of Your Spirit being poured out on Your sons and daughters.
Only the beginning of God with us.
Only the beginning of the in-breaking kingdom of God.
Only the beginning of good being done.
Only the beginning of gifts of healing for the sick and hurting.
Only the beginning of deliverance from demonic oppression.
Only the beginning of workings of miraculous powers.
Only the beginning of prophecy for the building up of Your bride.
Only the beginning of speaking and praying in new tongues.
Only the beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
Because there is no end mentioned, there is no end in sight.
Your kingdom will come.
May it come even now through us.
Your will will be done.
May it be done even now in us.
Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Amen.
