Teach Us to Do What is Good: A Prayer

Father,

You have shown us what is good and what You require of us as spoken through the prophet Micah.

We are to act justly.

We are to love mercy.

We are to walk humbly.

But not on our own.

We are to act justly with You, our God.

We are to love mercy with You, our God.

We are to walk humbly with You, our God.

We don’t get to decide what it looks like to act justly.

We don’t get to decide what it means to love mercy.

We don’t get to decide what it feels like to walk humbly.

You do.

You are Lord and King.

We are citizens of Your Kingdom called to live Your way.

And You have not simply spoken but You have shown us in Jesus.

Jesus, help us to live our lives with You and to learn from Your example.

May we act justly as You act justly.

Teach us to defend and care for the orphan and widow.

Teach us to welcome the lonely and hopeless, the poor and homeless into community.

Teach us to fear You, O Lord, to live wisely, to be quick to hear but slow to speak and to anger.

May we love mercy as You love mercy.

Teach us to pour out the riches of mercy we have received from You.

Teach us to live with eyes of compassion for those around us—not seeing them as projects needing fixed but as people needing love.

Teach us to give generously like the Samaritan who did good.

May we walk humbly as You walk humbly.

Teach us to wash feet.

Teach us to lay down our “rights.”

Teach us what it means to become all things to all men for the sake of the gospel.

Jesus…

May we love as You loved.

May we live as You lived.

May we bleed as You bled.

We are citizens of Your Kingdom. You are our King.

Our allegiance is to You first and foremost. To living out the Cross and Empty Grave.

We are sojourners. We belong to another Kingdom.

Help us remember that we are called to live for You. You have called us out of darkness and away from futile thinking to live as children of light.

Convict and transform our hearts, Holy Spirit, to fear God instead of man, to seek to please God instead of man. It’s only by Your leading that we can do so.

We love You. Help us to love You more. Help us to love others more.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
