Let There Be: A Prayer

“Let There Be” is a prayer from reflection and meditation on God’s word—things He has spoken, is speaking and will speak—and the power it holds to transform and create.

Father,

In the beginning…

You spoke.

You said, “Let there be…”

And there was.

Every time.

Without fail, Your words brought forth life.

And when all was said and done, You said it was very good.

There was shalom—peace, life, wholeness, flourishing.

Everything was exactly as it was meant to be.

But then something snapped. We chose our own way. Everything shattered and fell to pieces.

And ever since, we’ve gone our own way trying to make our own shalom.

Yet we are never satisfied. Without fail, we are disappointed.

Because our hearts ache for Your shalom once again, not ours.

Thankfully, You didn’t give up on us.

Thankfully, You weren’t done speaking.

Some years later, You spoke again through Isaiah saying:

As the rain and the snow
Come down from heaven,
And do not return to it
Without watering the earth
And making it bud and flourish,
So that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater
So is My word that goes out from My mouth:
It will not return to Me empty,
But will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

And then years after that, a disciple named John began transposing new words…

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning…. The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Your Word came.

His name: Jesus.

And Jesus fulfilled the purpose for which You sent Him.

He spoke and the poor received good news.

He spoke and the prisoners were set free.

He spoke and the sick were healed.

He spoke and the oppressed were released.

He spoke and the Lord’s favor began to overflow.

And on the Cross, He cried, “It is finished.” (John 19v30)

The Father’s Word accomplished what He desired. Jesus achieved the purposes of His Father.

But Jesus rose.

And, He continues to speak.

He speaks to us through His Scripture.

He speaks to us through His Spirit.

He speaks to us through one another.

Father, teach us to speak Your words.

Words that carry power.

Words that heal.

Words that free.

Words that give life.

Words that restore hope.

Words that tangibly change the world around us.

Give us Your words.

Because You desire to terraform this earth into heaven, this world into Your kingdom.

And You’ve made us part of that process.

You’ve given us the joy and honor of bringing Your kingdom here and now, doing Your will here and now.

Please, Father, increase our awareness and connection with Your Holy Spirit.

Give us Your words.

Speak again.

Through us even.

Just as You’ve said before, “Let there be…”

Say it again.

Do it again.

Let it be so.

Let it be just as You say.

Let there be light in the darkness.

Let there be beauty from the ashes.

Let there be good news for the poor.

Let there be freedom for the captives.

Let there be healing for the sick.

Let there be salvation for the sinner.

Let there be life in death.

Let there be…

Amen.

Take a moment today to read and meditate on Psalm 29. Reflect on the power that God’s word, His voice holds. Listen for what He is speaking over your life. Ask Him to give you His words to speak into others’ lives. Ask Him to speak into existence the good and true longings and desires of your heart.
