Lead Us Not Into Temptation: A Prayer

Today’s prayer “Lead Us Not Into Temptation” is the seventh in a series of prayers working through the Lord’s prayer found in Matthew 6v9-13 and Luke 11v2-4. The Lord’s prayer is a teaching from Jesus on how to pray and provides us with a framework for living life with the Father. You should begin by reading the prayers “Father,” “In Heaven,” “Hallowed Be Your Name,” “Your Kingdom Come, Your Will Be Done,” “Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread” and “Forgiven to be Forgiving.”

Father,

Lead us not into temptation.

We just asked for forgiveness for our sins.

But, we also ask that we would have to ask for it less.

That we would become who You say we are.

That we would become more like Jesus.

So please, lead us not into temptation.

Sometimes, we really want to give into temptation.

But, we know it’s not what is best or what we need or even truly want.

You are our Father in heaven.

You are all we need, and all we need is in You.

We don’t need to depend on ourselves or take shortcuts to fulfill our needs and desires.

We simply need You.

So, we pray Lead us not into temptation.

Instead, lead us to Yourself. Form us and transform us.

Teach us Your ways. Show us Your paths.

We don’t want to go our own way. We don’t want to go back to the slavery of the flesh.

We want to go Your way. We want to live life to the fullest in Your freedom.

Father, please lead us from sin to holiness.

From slavery to freedom.

From shame to glory.

From darkness to light.

From disappointment to hope.

From despair to joy.

From wrongdoing to righteousness.

Lead us not into temptation.

We want to be people of Your name.

We want to be people of Your kingdom.

We want to be people of Your will.

Lead us there. Away from sin. Away from temptation.

Lead us to Yourself.

For You are all that is good and beautiful and true.

Our desires are fulfilled in You alone.

Sin will never fulfill our desires.

Only You can.

When we pray Lead us not into temptation,

We are really saying We want You, Father, not our sin.

We know You are better. Better than anything.

You are our Father who loves us as Your children.

You are near us, with us.

You are good, beautiful, true and lovely.

You hear our prayers and stuff happens because You answer!

You are our Provider, Sustainer and Nourisher.

You are forgiving.

Because of who You are,

We confess that we want You, Father, not our sin.

Because of who You are,

We ask that You lead us not into temptation.

Amen.

Take a moment today to consider the habitual sins and temptations in your life. Confess them to God. Consider the cost Jesus paid for you to be free from your sin and temptations. Ask Him to lead you from those. Confess your love and desire for Him. Ask for the Holy Spirit to transform you.

And pray that He leads you not into temptation.
