In Heaven: A Prayer

Today’s prayer “In Heaven” is the second in a series of prayers working through what is known as the Lord’s prayer found in Matthew 6v9-13 and Luke 11v2-4. The Lord’s prayer is a teaching from Jesus on how to pray and provides us with a framework for communicating and living life with the Father. You should begin by reading last week’s prayer entitled “Father.”

Father,

You are in heaven.

But not necessarily the heaven we think of.

You are in the heavens.

The sky.

The air.

Yes, above and beyond us in a sense.

Yet, also near and close and all around us.

Not in some mystical, figurative sense.

But truly, tangibly near and close.

Closer than our skin.

You’re in each breath, in the very air that fills up our lungs.

You’re actually with us.

You go before us, behind us and with us.

You care for us and watch over us.

Not to catch us tripping up, doing something we shouldn’t and so punish us.

But to keep us from tripping up in the first place, to point out the hole and the danger.

And to help us back up when we do trip, to brush us off, to embrace us in love.

You are good and loving and caring, Father.

You’re not a father that’s far off and aloof.

You’re near us, with us always.

It’s not hard to find you.

It’s not hard to be with you.

When we don’t feel You, it’s not because You’re absent.

It’s because we’ve been absent—distracted and deceived by things of this world.

But, thankfully, we don’t have to be absent, to remain absent because You are present.

We can return to You and Your presence.

In the midst of the shame, You’re there waiting to clothe us in holiness and wholeness.

In the midst of the anxiety, You’re there waiting to give us peace in Your presence.

In the midst of the joy, You’re there waiting to celebrate with us and make our joy complete.

In the midst of the asking, You’re there waiting for us to listen and hear You speak.

In the midst of the sin, You’re there waiting to sing deliverance and forgiveness and healing over us.

Because while You’re in heaven…

You’re also in the heavens.

Thank You for being so close.

Amen.
