A With God Kind of Prayer

A prayer inspired from reflection on Psalm 131 and Deuteronomy 33v12.

O Father,

My heart is not proud. My eyes are not haughty. I know I am limited. I cannot know all. I cannot be all. I know I am dependent.

Dependent on You, Father.

But that’s okay. It’s good. It’s part of being truly, fully human.

And You are dependable. You are righteous and faithful to keep Your promises.

Knowing You is all that truly matters. Nothing else matters but to know You, to love You, to commune with You, to be with You.

And so, I will be.

I will be still.

I will be quiet.

I will be present.

With all that is deep within me, I will rest and delight in You.

Like a weaned child with its mother, I will enjoy You not for what You can do for me but for who You are, for Your nearness and Your presence.

You are Love, and You love me. You say of me You are my beloved. You are the one I love.

As Your beloved, I rest secure in You, for You shield me in Your arms.

As the one You love, I rest on Your chest, between Your shoulders, my Father.

And as I rest, I hear how Your heart beats for me.

Both now and forevermore, my hope is in You, Father.

Amen.

This prayer is a reflection of what my friend Kevin calls a “with God” kind of life—a life that is lived simply present with God, a life of enjoying His presence and living out of the overflow of that with-ness, that nearness.

It takes humility to recognize we not only need this kind of life but are made for this kind of life.

It requires rest and repentance, quietness and trust to acknowledge we need the Giver more than any of His gifts.

It necessitates that we know who our Father is and who He says we are.

Take time today to humble yourself. To rest and repent. To quiet and trust. To know Him and know yourself in Him.

You will be met with compassion. With mercy. With love.

In the LORD’s eyes, you are His beloved. You are the one the LORD loves. And that changes everything…but have you let it? Have you received Him and His love in this way where you can simply be with Him?

Some days, it is easier than others to be in His presence. But, there’s also always the opportunity to give ourselves more fully to Love each day, to know God who is Love even more.

What is keeping you from fully being in the Father’s presence today, of allowing Him to love you?

May this prayer be an invitation for you to enter into conversation with your Father today—both speaking to Him and allowing Him to speak over you.

May it be an encouragement for you to surround yourself with a community of the Spirit that can encourage you in grace, love and truth.
